Since we left Dunedin we spent a fantastic night in Queenstown. It’s ridiculously gorgeous (lakes, mountains…) so it’s also very touristy. As a result, we drove around for a while from motel to motel trying to book a room that wasn’t $200.
FYI: the motels in NZ are NOT like the vile Super 8s and Red Roof Inns in the US – they’re very clean, quite Spartan, but have kitchens. It’s really all you need, and all we can afford now that we’re on our 4th week of traveling!
After checking in to our motel, we wandered into town and had a drink at this really cool historic bar called Eichardt’s. It was nice inside but as I sat on their fancy vintage leather bench drinking my watered down $16 Cosmo while listening to this super-loud Kiwi chick speak to her inebriated friends at full volume, Iain looked at me and said, “Yeah, I’m really glad we came here.” However, the bartender got a decent picture of both of us, so that makes up for it, kind of!
